How to Tell Life to Take a Break

It’s easy to get caught up in a busy life. The world around us tells that we aren’t doing or working hard enough. No matter what job you may have, it seems to get busier and busier all the time. We have an endless to-do list. And that doesn’t even include our personal to-do lists. I just now scheduled a hair cut for myself! It has been months….

So what do we do when we have had enough? How do we tell life to take a break?

This has been a big focus of mine for a while, so I have a few ideas. Here are my top 5 ways to tell life to take a break:

1. Leave Work at Work

2. Take Care of Yourself First

3. Seek Guidance

4. Have a Positive Daily Routine

5. Take a Pause

Leave Work at Work

Believe me, I know the struggle of this. I am a teacher. The job is never done at 3:30. My to-do list is never ending. When I overwork myself, I never get a break…not even at my own house. So, I choose at least one or two days a week to leave my work at work. Yep, that includes my laptop. I have nothing at home to make me even think about work!

I find a way to switch out of work mode the moment I get home. Usually, I take a shower and change into comfy clothes. It helps remind my body and mind to relax and that I don’t have anyone to take care of for the evening (I don’t have kids yet, so I know that will change). Maybe you need to do a workout right after work to make the switch or go on a walk.

Choose what works for you.

Lastly, be present. This is the toughest to do, because it’s hard to turn your brain off. But when you finally do…it is truly wonderful.

Take Care of Yourself First

Kids, or no kids, you can’t help others if you aren’t taking care of yourself. It’s like in an airplane, they tell you to put your own oxygen mask on before helping others. You can’t help others if you’re unconscious. Same goes for life. “Put your oxygen mask on first” —

Treat yourself a few times a week. Grab dinner at your favorite restaurant or grab a Starbucks on your way to work. Buy something you have really wanted. Amazon is so easy! Schedule a massage, nail appointment, or hair cut. It always feels good when you take care of yourself.

Seek Guidance

Make sure that you have at least one person in your circle you can talk to. No, it shouldn’t be a vent session every time…but a person you can call on the phone or grab drinks with. You can’t help yourself on your own, no matter how “invincible“ you are.

Read more! Even people who still claim to “hate reading” can find something to read. Research some books on topics that you’re interested in and will help you. For me, lately, I have been reading about Clean Eating and “How to Be a Bad Ass” (check below for book suggestions). Read blogs about living a better and positive lifestyle. There is so much help out there, so go out and find it!

Have a Positive Daily Routine

I believe, and have read, that having a solid daily routine is the best way to live a better life. It gives you the confidence to tell life to take a break. Start your mornings better! Wake up with enough time for a solid breakfast. No more liquid breakfasts or going to work without eating at all. Your body and mind needs it! Breakfast is the best place to start a better day.

Pray more. Pray in the morning and in the evening.

Also, if you really have enough time in the morning, workout or find a place to meditate. You need to start your morning positive and calm, otherwise life will be right back at telling you that you aren’t doing enough.

End your day shutting your busy mind off. Tell life that you are closed for the evening. Then, go back to reading above about taking care of yourself and leaving work at work. No matter how busy your day is, your body and mind will be ready to face it and actually be able to relax when it’s time to relax.

Take a Pause

This could be a long pause, like a day off or a weeklong vacation. Or simply, spending a Saturday or Sunday actually enjoying the day off. Embrace the world around you.

Depending on the season and where you live:

  • Go for a hike or walk
  • Plan a lunch or dinner with your friends
  • Exert some energy with a workout class, skiing, bike ride, etc.
  • Call someone you haven’t talked to in a long time
  • Go see a movie
  • Take a drive
  • Plan a weekend getaway

You know what’s out there. So… go find some “Goddamn peace and quiet”! 😁

Enjoy the pause.

So, this is my challenge — choose somewhere to start so that you can tell life that it’s time to take a break. It is so easy to get caught up in jobs, drama, relationships, etc. Life is just too short to be too busy to actually live it!
